It is widely known as LAPTOP COMPUTER but men who do not want to risk their ability to have children should avoid placing it on their laps when using it. Scientist has actually advice that man should place their laptop computers on a surface instead of their laps to avoid causing “irreversible or partially reversible changes in their reproductive functions.”
According to the study titled, Increase in Scrotal Temperature in laptop computer users, a combination of the heat generated by a laptop and the position of the thigh on which it is placed lead to higher temperatures around a man’s genitals and over time can result in low sperm count.
Low sperm count, also called oligospermia, according to Concise Medical Dictionary 6th Edition means that semen contains lower sperm cells (spermatozoa) than normal. The sperm count is said to be lower than normal when there are less than 20 million sperm cell per millilitre of semen with poor movement and immature forms. A low sperm count decreases the chances of one’s sperm fertilizing an egg, resulting in pregnancy.
Nevertheless, many men who have low sperm count are still able to father children.
The introduction of new technology such as modem, Bluetooth and Infrared connections – which provide wireless links to the Internet – has resulted in a growing number of male placing the laptop computer on their thigh rather than on a desk. This result in higher scrotal temperature which can damage sperm cell and affect fertility. It has been ascertained that the excessive heat from laptops can negatively influence sperm count and affect the male reproductive system.
Researchers at the State University of New York, Stonybrook in the journal, Human Reproduction, December 2004 edition warned that teenage boys and young men should consider cutting the time spent with a laptop computer place on their laps because of the possible long-term damage to their fertility.
Therefore, whether at home, in the office, at the bar with friends or anywhere, it is recommended that laptops be placed on desks and other surfaces in order to prevent sperm damage and reduce the counts of motility.
